I grew up playing football, basketball, and baseball. I played all 3 of those sports during high school. I then played football and baseball at Albion College (D III) for 4 years each. I never ran more than necessary for those sports. After college was done with, I went through a period of inactivity and fell into a rut of a somewhat sedentary lifestyle. I quickly realized this was not for me and wanted to become active and healthy again. I read the well-known book, Born to Run, on my honeymoon which inspired me to start this running journey. Shortly thereafter, my 2 college friends asked me to run the Detroit Marathon with them in the Fall of 2011. I had no idea what I was getting myself into put I figured "why not"? Before the race I wanted to see if I was able to complete the distance so I mapped out a 26.2 mile route starting from my house with my car (no GPS at the time). I completed that route and distance for my first ever marathon in a time of 4 hrs and 33 mins. I bonked like crazy, followed the worst nutrition strategy ever, and suffered greatly. I learned many many things from that event which were both good and bad. However it was very comforting knowing that I was completely able to complete that distance, even with very limited prior training (not recommended). Ever since then I have been running all sorts of distances up to 100 miles.
For me, running is the means through which transformation takes place.
